Ever
increasing pressure to improve efficiency and achieve greater throughput
means that ports and harbor authorities need all the help that they
can get.
One
way to improve performance is to improve port traffic levels, and
in order to do this, accurate, real time information on water levels
and currents is required.
ASL's
extensive experience in oceanographic studies means we are ideally
suited to provide products and services that respond to this need.
A
wide range of instruments utilizing user-friendly
outputs together with flexibility in designing custom
studies makes ASL your obvious choice when you are looking for
solutions in this area.

Current
Flow Measurement
The
Open Channel Acoustic Scintillation Flow Meter, (ASFM
- Open Channel), is designed to measure spatially averaged
channel flow without the need for instrumentation in the channel
proper, thus avoiding problems with floating debris, traffic,
etc.
ASL
provides flow measurements consisting of, detailed mapping of
flow patterns using ADCP instrumentation, under varying tidal
conditions.

Wave
and Water Level Measurement
ASL
maintains a wide range of instruments
which can be used to monitor waves and water levels. Real time
output from these devices, together with current meters, means
that optimum use can be made of port facilities.
ASL
conducted a study in 2000 using the Wave Profiler .
The study involved measurements of the PacifCat fast ferry vessels,
introduced for operations in coastal waters off British Columbia,
Canada. The study examined possible effects of ferry wash on beach
users, small vessels and coastal environments.

Custom
Studies
In
addition to the above instruments, ASL is able to offer a wide
range of custom studies and numerical
modeling to enable port and harbor authorities to increase
the efficiency of their operations.
