Technical
Synopsis
The
ASFM measures the flow in a turbulent medium by transmitting sound
signals across the channel or conduit in which the flow is
to be measured. The turbulence in the flow causes random fluctuations,
or scintillations, in the amplitude and phase of the sound as it
travels through the water. The water velocity is measured by observing
the drift of scintillations across two closely-spaced propagation
paths.
The
ASFM measures the average velocity (both the magnitude and inclination)
at several preselected levels. The total discharge is calculated
by intergrating the average horizontal component of the velocity
at each level over the total cross-sectional area of the intake.
The
transducer arrays can either be fixed to the intake walls, for a
permanent installation, or attached to a frame deployed into a gate
slot and relocated as required, for one time measurements.

Why
should you choose the ASFM?
- Higher
energy prices and limited water resources demand optimal efficiency
of operation. The ASFM offers accurate, reliable, total flow measurement
for efficiency testing in support of turbine upgrade, fish screen
installations or other reasons.
- Long
straight sections of intake NOT REQUIRED! The ASFM is well suited
to low-head dams where the thermodynamic and pressure-time methods
are impractical and acoustic time of travel meters are hampered
by short intakes and/or irregular geometry.
- Unlike
the existing meters, requires no instrumentation in the measurement
zone, avoiding any interference with the flow being measured.
- Significant
installation cost savings. Easily deployed into single or multi-bay
intakes using a frame to support the transducers at the measurement
levels. This allows the same equipment and frames to be used at
all intakes at a multi-unit plant or to be transported to another
site with similar intakes.
- Easy
to operate, featuring simple, user-friendly displays and outputs.
Discharge data are available immediately.
- Reduction
in operation costs. Data can be collected quickly and easily without
de-watering the intake. Minimal plant down-time.
- Overall
excellent return on investment, resulting from lower installation
and operation costs and the portability of the system.
