scintillation flow meter

Features ~ Technical Synopsis
Existing Applications ~ Why choose ASFM?

When you need to...

Assess existing turbine efficiency
Accept new or upgraded turbines
Improve operating efficiency
Verify minimum flow requirements

Oceanography ElectronicsYou need the Acoustic Scintillation Flow Meter (ASFM) for fast, accurate measurements of hydro-electric turbine discharge.

Our ongoing commitment to R&D and Product Development makes absolute discharge measurements simple and accurate.

Further information on hydroelectric applications can be found at ASL AQFlow Inc. web-site.

Features:

  • Installs in short intakes - Perfect for Low Head Plants
  • Easily deploys into single or multi-bay intakes
  • Provides accurate measurements you can depend on
  • User-friendly displays and outputs
  • Non-Intrusive and Portable
  • Excellent Return On Investment
  • No dewatering necessary

Technical Synopsis

The ASFM measures the flow in a turbulent medium by transmitting sound signals  across the channel or conduit in which the flow is to be measured. The turbulence in the flow causes random fluctuations, or scintillations, in the amplitude and phase of the sound as it travels through the water. The water velocity is measured by observing the drift of scintillations across two closely-spaced propagation paths.drift of scintillation

The ASFM measures the average velocity (both the magnitude and inclination) at several preselected levels. The total discharge is calculated by intergrating the average horizontal component of the velocity at each level over the total cross-sectional area of the intake.

The transducer arrays can either be fixed to the intake walls, for a permanent installation, or attached to a frame deployed into a gate slot and relocated as required, for one time measurements.

hydro applicationsExisting Applications

The ASFM has proven highly accurate, not only in the lab, but also under the demanding field conditions.

  • Low Head Plant flow measurement
  • Flow monitoring to detect trash rack blockages
  • Open Channel flow measurement

Existing Clients

  • US Army Corps of Engineers
  • Tennessee Valley Authority
  • Hydro-Quebec
  • Vatenfall AB
  • B.C. Hydro
  • Chelan P.U.D.
  • Manitoba Hydro
  • Chelan Public Utility District

Why should you choose the ASFM?

  • Higher energy prices and limited water resources demand optimal efficiency of operation. The ASFM offers accurate, reliable, total flow measurement for efficiency testing in support of turbine upgrade, fish screen installations or other reasons.
  • Long straight sections of intake NOT REQUIRED! The ASFM is well suited to low-head dams where the thermodynamic and pressure-time methods are impractical and acoustic time of travel meters are hampered by short intakes and/or irregular geometry.
  • Unlike the existing meters, requires no instrumentation in the measurement zone, avoiding any interference with the flow being measured.
  • Significant installation cost savings. Easily deployed into single or multi-bay intakes using a frame to support the transducers at the measurement levels. This allows the same equipment and frames to be used at all intakes at a multi-unit plant or to be transported to another site with similar intakes.
  • Easy to operate, featuring simple, user-friendly displays and outputs. Discharge data are available immediately.
  • Reduction in operation costs. Data can be collected quickly and easily without de-watering the intake. Minimal plant down-time.
  • Overall excellent return on investment, resulting from lower installation and operation costs and the portability of the system.
