Ice ProfilerProjects

Beaufort Gyre Freshwater Experiment (WHOI)

  • Andrey Proshutinsky of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is the principle investigator for the Beaufort Gyre Freshwater Experiment: A study of fresh water accumulation and release mechanism and a role of fresh water in Arctic climate variability.

Three ASL 420kHz Ice Profiler will provide information about sea ice draft. A fourth one will be added in 2005.

Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI)

  • A custom version of the Ice Profiler will be mounted on the MBARI AUV and used to measure ice draft while the AUV is underway underneath the ice. Deployment was in the Arctic. The Ice Profiler will be used to produce scientific quality ice draft measurements and also to locate appropriate locations for the launch of the AUV data transfer buoys which will transmit data via the ARGOS satellite.

Marathon Oil/EXXON

  • To support the design and operational planning for offshore oil and gas activities off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island in the Russian Federation, an ongoing program of ice keel draft and ice velocity measurement is being conducted. The program was expanded to include Ice Profiler derived wave measurements.
Institute of Ocean Sciences (IOS)
  • Originally developed by IOS (Dr. Humfrey Melling) in collaboration with ASL, an updated version of the Ice Profiler has been used to obtain ice data from the Beaufort Sea.

Bedford Institute of Oceanography

  • As part of a study on the effects of ice forces on the Confederation Bridge between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

University of Hawaii

  • For scientific research in Antarctica examining ice draft, presence or absence of ice in conjunction with sediment studies.

University of Hokkaido

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

  • Scientific research studies in Antarctic shelf areas.
